Plant-based, affordable proteins and scalable production – to shape a more sustainable future for everyone

What is the Challenge?

Today all animal-based proteins, even the ones used in pharma, are coming from industrial farming. The production is timely, expensive and contributes to climate change, releasing vast volumes of greenhouse gasses. Furthermore, most animals have to suffer under inhumane living conditions. The use of animal-free and plant-based alternatives can drastically reduce the overall carbon dioxide emissions – for example, the cellular agriculture meat production processes could use 45% less energy if plant-based proteins (biomolecules) were used instead. What if there was an animal-free, affordable alternative with a scalable production process that causes less harm to the environment?

What is the Solution?

Biotech startup Tiamat produces affordable animal-free proteins, using a proprietary plant molecular farming platform. By bringing together molecular biology, vertical farming and a data-driven approach, Tiamat manufactures animal-free proteins that can replace costly bioreactors. Those reinvented proteins can be used in a number of different areas such as cellular agriculture, regenerative medicine, and novel vaccine production. With substantially lower production costs, the Tiamat proteins can be offered about 10 times cheaper than the current market offers with fermentation technologies. As Tiamat scales up, the team believes they can achieve production 1,000 times cheaper by 2025 as a starting point for a much bigger scale to enable the new era of biomanufacturing.

Plants are crucial to achieve sustainable biomanufacturing, as they provide quantities of product created in less than four weeks. The proteins can be offered at a reduced cost, using less water and energy, and fully compostable. In today’s economy, it is difficult to find animal-free alternatives in products such as clothing and medicines, many of which today are made with animal-based reagents. Tiamat’s plants define a new standard in safety and sustainability, providing growth factors, cytokines, enzymes, and high-value and animal-free proteins.
