Why are we focusing on the issue of methane?

Methane emissions are rising faster than ever.

While 158 countries have committed to reducing methane emissions by 30% by 2030 under the Global Methane Pledge, new research reveals that the world’s methane emissions have been increasing at a record pace over the past five years.

  • Global methane emissions are currently estimated at 570 million metric tons per year, with approximately 60% coming from human activities.
  • The fossil fuel industry alone accounts for 33% of human-caused methane emissions, while agriculture contributes 40%, mainly from livestock.
  • Landfills and waste make up about 20% of emissions.
