Building a laser-driven fusion power plant to enable clean, safe and reliable energy

What is the Challenge?

One of the UN’s SDGs is to “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy” but as today’s global electricity mix is still dominated by fossil fuels, accounting for around 60% of the global electricity production, we have a great challenge in front of us. How can we harness the power of new fusion technology in a way that not harms the planet with long-lived waste and emissions?

What is the Solution?

German-based Marvel Fusion is developing laser-driven fusion as a possible solution to overcome the barriers to produce clean energy at large scale. Taking advantage of the latest scientific innovations in laser and nanotechnology, Marvel Fusion’s new technology concept is based on highly intense short-pulsed lasers and proprietary fuel targets. Instead of heating the fuel plasma to very high temperatures, Marvel Fusion controls the conversion of input laser energy to accelerated fuel particles through the design of its nanostructured targets. This approach allows for higher efficiency in triggering fusion reactions and greater energy yields. The laser technology used is based on the approach of Donna Strickland and Gérard Mourou, who won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics.

In the future, Marvel Fusion plans to generate electricity in its own power plant, produced with zero-carbon emissions causing no durable waste. The powerplants are particularly suitable for supplying energy-intensive industries with a reliable base load.
