Loresa Health

Enabling safe, affordable laparoscopic surgery in every setting

What is the Challenge?

Approximately 5 billion people worldwide lack access to safe surgical care, with the majority residing in lower-middle-income countries. This disparity leads to 1.5 million preventable deaths annually and is projected to result in over $12 trillion in lost economic output by 2030. A significant portion of unmet surgical needs could be addressed through minimally invasive surgeries (MIS) like laparoscopic procedures. However, the high costs associated with MIS equipment and the necessity for general anaesthesia pose substantial barriers, especially in resource-limited settings.

What is the Solution?

Loresa Health is dedicated to improving access to minimally invasive abdominal surgery by eliminating the need for insufflation in resource-limited settings. Their flagship product, the Retractor for Abdominal Insufflation-less Surgery (RAIS), is a low-cost retractor designed to facilitate gasless laparoscopy. Developed collaboratively by surgeons and engineers from the University of Leeds in the UK and India, RAIS mechanically lifts the abdominal wall, creating the necessary space for laparoscopic procedures without the use of CO₂ gas or general anesthesia. This innovation offers benefits such as shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and reduced complications.

By focusing on resource-limited settings, Loresa Health empowers surgeons to deliver safer and more effective care, bridging the gap in surgical access and saving lives. Their mission-driven approach aims to make a tangible and positive impact on the lives of those who need it the most, ensuring that every individual, regardless of geographic location or socioeconomic status, has access to minimally invasive and safer surgical procedures.
